FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Security Authority of India. It is a government agency governed by the Indian government and the Ministry of Health and Family Affairs. The Food Safety and Security Act of 2006 recognizes FSSAI. It is an organization created to preserve the public’s health. All people participating in the food business, whether as a manufacturer, trader, or food business operator (FBO), are required to receive a 14-digit FSSAI number, which is written on the package of food so that consumers may purchase it as per FSSAI standards and safe for consumption. If you want to start a food business, you must first obtain a food license from the FSSAI government. No one may start a food business without a license; otherwise, the penal provisions of the act will apply.
Food licensing authorities have taken action to protect the food industry’s food products, which are checked in many aspects to assure the quality of the food and that it is safe for human consumption, resulting in fewer incidents of adulteration and contamination of food that is of poor quality. Thus, obtaining a food license or registration is required, depending on the area and the yearly turnover of the food business operator.
To conduct food business in India, all food business operators must obtain a food license, which is one of the most significant licenses governed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) under the FSS (Licensing & Registration of Food Business) Regulations 2011. Nowadays, most people are health-conscious, and before purchasing a food product, they must ensure that it is free of adulteration, contamination, and contains hygienic components that meet standards. FSSAI ensures that all food products are safe to consume. The majority of individuals prefer to consume FSSAI-certified items.
To obtain an FSSAI license or registration, a food business operator must meet the following requirements: –
- Basic Registration- Annual revenue can reach INR 12 lakh.- Form “A”
- State License- Annual revenue exceeds 12 lakhs but can reach 20 crores. Form “B”
- Central License- Annual turnover is more than 20 crores, Form “B”
If the applicant/company is unable to meet the requirements of the FSSAI and fails to produce relevant documentation for safety evaluation, the company’s product may be rejected by the relevant authorities. Over the previous few decades, numerous top-tier goods have been rejected owing to the presence of components that are harmful for ingestion and do not meet food safety standards. As a result, enterprises are required to follow the FSSAI regulations in order to obtain a food license and product approval before introducing it into the market.
The FSSAI penalizes companies that fail to follow and comply with the laws and complete the conditions outlined in the Act.
